Use Spacepal from Raycast
The Spacepal Raycast extension lets you type part of a Space's name, note or one of its apps and jump there, send the front window to another Space, go back to your last Space and open the overview. The extension is coming to the Raycast Store. Until it is listed, Raycast Quicklinks with spacepal:// links cover the same actions.
The extension's commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| Switch Space | Lists every Space with its note, color, first apps and desktop number, marks the current one, and searches by name, note, app or number. Actions: Switch to Space, Move Front Window Here. |
| Move Window to Space | Lists the other desktops and sends the front window to the one you pick |
| Back to Last Space | Returns to the Space you were on before |
| Show Space Overview | Opens Spacepal's overview of every Space |
Give the commands a Raycast hotkey or alias like any other command. Spacepal has to be running: the extension reads the list of Spaces from Spacepal's state.json and runs every action through a spacepal:// link. If the list is empty, it says "Spacepal is not running".
Until it is in the Store: Quicklinks
Raycast Quicklinks open a link with one command, and they work with app URL schemes such as spacepal://. In Raycast, run Create Quicklink, give it a name and paste one of these as the link:
| Quicklink name | Link |
|---|---|
| Space: Mail | spacepal://switch/Mail |
| Space: Desktop 3 | spacepal://switch/3 |
| Last Space | spacepal://back |
| Space Overview | spacepal://overview |
| Window to Space 2 | spacepal://move-window/2 |
| Prepare to Unplug | spacepal://eject |
For one Quicklink that asks which Space, Raycast supports a typed argument placeholder in the link, such as spacepal://switch/{argument name="Space"}. We have not tested every Raycast version, so if the placeholder is not replaced, check Raycast's own help for Quicklink placeholders. Names match exactly first, then by the start of the name, then anywhere in it, so typing cli finds "Client B".
Script Commands
If you prefer Raycast Script Commands, a two-line script does the same:
#!/bin/bash
# @raycast.schemaVersion 1
# @raycast.title Next Space
# @raycast.mode silent
open -g "spacepal://next"
What the actions can and cannot do
- Moving the front window works on every supported macOS version. Spacepal tries a direct WindowServer move first and falls back to dragging the window by its title bar.
- Links that move windows that are not in front, such as
spacepal://restore-layoutandspacepal://eject, use only the direct move, which works on macOS 14.0 to 14.4 and on 26.4 and later. On other versions those windows stay where they are. - Adding and removing desktops (
spacepal://add-desktop) is in the direct version only.
The full list of links is in the URL scheme docs.
